Van Gogh's work and personality continue to give rise to new art. This is what the exhibition Because of Vincent - Van Gogh's birthplace shows as inspiration in Stedelijk Museum Breda. The exhibition shows highlights from the collection and the artist-in-residence program of the Vincent van GoghHuis in Zundert.
What is the benefit of working for weeks on Van Gogh's native soil? And how do you, as an artist, relate to an icon like Van Gogh and his world-famous work? These questions are central to the exhibition 'Because of Vincent - Van Gogh's birthplace as inspiration.' Van Gogh comes to life in a surprising way in 85 contemporary installations, paintings, videos, photos and sculptures. “The exhibition in two rooms has been set up thematically, in the first room nature plays an important role, an almost religious phenomenon for Van Gogh. The second room focuses on the person of Van Gogh and his life. You see that artists keep returning to the same subjects in relation to Van Gogh, such as his use of color, his love for nature, or his admiration for workers. These themes form the guideline," explains Masha van Vliet, guest curator of the exhibition, together with director-curator of the Vincent van GoghHuis in Zundert, Ron Dirven.
